Wetrooms - Walk In To Luxury

December 21st, 2009

Wetrooms are becoming increasingly popular, and are a stylish, spacious and luxurious addition to your home. Not only can they add value, but they also provide excellent accessibility, which is particularly useful for the elderly or young children, and at Bathroom2u we have a range of equipment to help you build your very own wetrooms.

Wet rooms are a fully tiled area with an open shower, sink and toilet. Drainage is fitted into the floor, which needs to have a gradient constructed to allow the water to drain easily. In new builds, these gradients can be built into a concrete floor whilst it is laid. However most houses have wooden flooring, where a hole needs to be cut into the joists and shower former (a bit like a shower tray) sunk into it. By then raising the rest of the floor a fraction, this creates the right gradients for drainage.

Before ‘Tanking’ (the term applied to waterproofing) it is recommended to use reinforcing tape to cover any vulnerable areas such as joins and corners, before covering the floor and walls with a thick, waterproof membrane. When the membrane is set, the area can be tiled using waterproof adhesive and grout.

Wetrooms are an ideal way to maximize the space and accessibility of your bathroom, and the thorough waterproofing means that your bathroom floor has better protection than a standard shower room. At Bathroom2u we have everything you need to get started on your wet rooms, whether starting from scratch or adding to your design.
