Getting Clever with Bathroom Lighting

June 26th, 2010

For many people, the best bathrooms to have are the ones that best catch the light; however, as confined spaces, creating a well-lit bathroom space can be a challenge – with this in mind, what are the best ways to light a bathroom?

One of the simplest, and most affordable, ways to manage the light in a bathroom is to utilise some well placed bathroom mirrors, this could mean a single large mirror above the sink. On the other hand, you could get more creative, and host some small mirrors on your window ledge. Whatever you choose to do, you will have to make sure that it matches the decor, and complements, rather and overwhelms, the other elements.

Of course, if you really want your bathroom to shine, then you’ll need some light sources. And, despite bathrooms being traditionally confined spaces, there are plenty of ways to do this. For example, you could install some modern, stylish spot bathroom lighting, which will act both as an effective light source, and an ultra-modern design feature in their own right.

For bathrooms on the smaller side, it is especially important that as much light is “taken in” as possible, and therefore as a broad rule: smaller bathrooms will benefit from lighter colours, such as white bathroom taps etc.

Where can you find all these lighting solutions? At Bathrooms2u, there is a wide range of bathroom lighting options, as well as mirrors and bathroom accessories – essentially everything that you need to create that well-lit bathroom space.

Saving Energy In The Bathroom

May 14th, 2010

These days everyone knows how important it is to conserve energy in the home. More and more people are becoming fully aware of their carbon footprint and the negative environmental impact it represents. Any way you look at it, that’s good news for all of us in the long run.

The bathroom and the kitchen are points of greater than average energy consumption in the home. The kitchen is where the oven, microwave, and refrigerator are. Even the kettle uses a great deal of power, albeit for short bursts of time. Aside from the hot water that gets piped in, bathroom lighting and heat are the biggest consumers of energy in that room. Bathroom lights, for example, are usually the brightest in the home.

You can maximise energy efficiency in the bathroom by saving water with intelligent modern shower valves and heads, but also by choosing greener bathroom heating methods and energy efficient lighting solutions.

Installing underfloor heating will give you one of the most efficient heating solutions available, and also mean an end to cold bathroom tiles on your bare feet on winter mornings. Because the whole room is heated gently from underneath, the room is warmed evenly and less energy is wasted. A radiator has to be very hot before there are no chilly corners left only a little distance away.

Modern, efficient lighting is brighter for the standard amperages and the bulbs also last much longer. They will save you money on electricity bills and you won’t have to replace them so often, so it’s well worth investing in a good bathroom lighting system.

The Bathroom Accessories you Always Need to Have

April 23rd, 2010

It wouldn’t be right to have a bathroom without the essential accessories - without them, how can it possibly look stylish? To help you ensure you’ve got everything required, here’s a quick run through of the bathroom accessories you always need to have.

•    Mirrors. You can’t possibly have a bathroom without mirrors – where would women put their makeup on, and where would men shave? Invest in at least one bathroom mirror, at the very least having one on the front of bathroom cabinets, if you don’t want to come unstuck.
•    Shower doors/curtains. Shower doors or curtains are always going to be essential, and ideally you want those that match the theme or the look of the rest of the room, so be sure to choose wisely.
•    Bins/toothbrush holders etc. The smaller bathroom accessories are just as important and can make or break the entire look of the room. A lot of stores offer matching sets, and if you want to look the part you’d be wise to consider investing in some.
•    Lights. The right bathroom lighting can make all the difference. You don’t want it too stark to make the room look too minimalist, but equally you don’t want it too dim so you can’t see what you’re doing. There’s a fine line, but the proper shades and bulbs can always help.

These are the main bathroom accessories you always need to have, and this is without considering the larger fixtures and fittings. Never underestimate the importance of having the proper accessories, and always come to us here at Bathroom2u for a diverse range to suit any requirements.

Bathroom Lighting Systems

April 6th, 2010

Of all rooms in the house, you want the bathroom to be the best lit. It’s where you’ll shave, put on makeup or generally examine yourself every morning, so bright white lighting is essential. The whiteness is easy to neglect, but you do want to see true colours in the bathroom, and to achieve this the light (what comes out, not the fitting!) does need to be white.

Because bathroom lighting needs to be bright and powerful, we try to range those with bulbs that are very energy efficient. These also last much longer then conventional bulbs. Positioned either in the centre of the available space or above the bathroom mirror, they are very effective. The mirror is where you’d like the brightest light, and we also have fluorescent bar style lights. Those are intended to be used in conjunction with a main ceiling lamp or other lighting.

If you use a spotlight or bathroom mirror lamp (or an illuminated mirror), the lighting in the rest of the room doesn’t need to be so harsh. You can choose from our range of fashionable wall lamps which give a softer bathroom lighting effect.

We’ve also got bathroom lighting solutions that are designed to the integrated into bathroom cabinets to work with mirrors, shower lights, and a range of spotlight arrays. Whichever one you choose, remember to get it professionally installed to stop electricity and water or humid air coming into contact. Make sure any holes in the ceiling or the walls are well treated with waterproof sealant, too.

Walk Into The Future With A Wetroom

February 4th, 2010

Wetrooms are becoming increasingly popular given their stylish, contemporary feel. The sense of luxury created from a wetroom is largely based on the freedom that you have to move about the bathroom, and ability to shower without the restriction of an enclosure or shower tray. At Bathroom2u we have a wide range of equipment to help you build the perfect wetroom to suit your taste.

One of the main advantages of a wetroom is the accessibility. Wetrooms are, more often than not, built with a shower unit and no bath, and since the shower needs no enclosure or tray the room becomes extremely spacious and relaxing. The drainage is fitted into the bathroom floor, which needs to be set to a gradient to allow the water to drain efficiently. Underfloor heating is a must for wetrooms. Simple to install, it creates an even spread of warmth throughout the room. Furthermore, underfloor heating is extremely economical since it maintains heat whilst set at a lower temperature than radiators or heated towel rains.

In some contemporary wetrooms a gravity drain or steep gradient is not feasible. In this instance you can opt for wetroom decks, which are a baseboard floor-former designed to allow a discreet wet floor gradient.

LED or halogen lighting is essential for wetrooms. Look also at de-mist mirrors which, as they sound, automatically de-mist – handy for a steamy wetroom.

At Bathroom2u we have all the equipment necessary to build your wetroom, and a range of accessories and lighting, so that you can turn your bathroom into a contemporary and luxurious haven.

Bathroom Lighting – An End To A Gloomy Room

January 22nd, 2010

An inefficiently lit bathroom can be extremely unwelcoming, particularly since the bathroom itself is a room for pampering, putting on make up or shaving before a night out. Bad lighting make such practicalities very difficult, as well as giving the bathroom a gloomy appearance. We have a range of bathroom lighting equipment to light entire bathrooms, or provide subtler improvements to ensure a well lit and welcoming space.

Ceiling lights create excellent direct lighting, giving an even spread of light across the entire room. Smaller bathrooms may benefit from a central ceiling fixture, whereas a larger room can gain advantage from ceiling spotlights which are multi-directional and can point at particular points of convenience, such as the bathroom mirror or the sink. Down lights are also fitted to the ceiling, however the beam is more focused, and are useful if you wish to provide strong light to a single area. Wall lights have a stylish appearance, and come in both horizontal and vertical light fittings.

A further way to light your bathroom can be by installing illuminated bathroom mirrors or bathroom cabinets. Illuminated bathroom mirrors create that essential lighting for shaving or make up, as do illuminated bathroom cabinets, but with the added advantage of storage.

Another area to consider is your shower, and there are a variety of shower lights available in chrome, stainless steel or white finishes, with many shapes and designs.

At Bathroom2u we have lighting to suit any bathroom, so you can see and enjoy your bathroom space in all its glory.

Wetrooms – The Way Forward

January 19th, 2010

As the time for a change arises, increasingly people are opting to convert their bathroom space into wetrooms. Wetrooms give the bathroom a contemporary feel, with ample space to relax and unwind after a hard day, or refresh before a night out. At Bathroom2u we have wetroom packages and equipment available to help you upgrade and update your bathroom.

Wetrooms ordinarily consist of a shower, lavatory and washbasin. Baths are not often installed in wetrooms with the drainage in the floor, which benefits your shower in the sense that there is no need for a space consuming shower enclosure or shower tray. A lot of people tend to have a bath installed in a separate room since it does not benefit from the drainage and can take up valuable space in a smaller wetroom.

The floor needs to be set to a gradient to allow the water to drain. When this is achieved the room will need ‘tanking’ which essentially means making it watertight. Use good adhesives to maintain the quality of your wetroom. Part of the luxury of the wetroom is the ability to shower freely without worry of water spillage, so be sure to install a decent power shower to reap the full benefits. When choosing sanitary fittings bear and mind that they are for a permanently wet area and must be suitable for this environment. LED and halogen lighting are a must, and should be fixed into the ceiling or wall.

At Bathroom2u we have all the necessities to create your wetroom and bring your bathroom space into the future.
